Motivation is critical to achieving performance in organizations. Work motivation is a complex interplay of internal and external factors that initiate work behavior and influence its direction, strength, and duration. To foster work motivation, purposeful activities, empowerment, and autonomy are key. To consistently enhance motivation, companies should determine the following:
1) Create purposeful tasks
in which employees are actively working toward a goal they perceive as meaningful.
2) Grant employees autonomy
and freedom to exercise personal choice.
3) Foster personal judgment
in order to produce outcomes that impact the organization. Once the employee is empowered by the ability to exercise personal choice is their responsibility to act accordingly.
To promote motivation, it’s crucial to keep in mind that significant work should be completed independently and that employees should be allowed to exercise their own judgment.
